Arvo Pärt: STABAT
The Choir of Clare College, Cambridge
The Dmitri Ensemble
Jamie Campbell | violin
Oliver Coates | cello
Graham Ross | conductor
Recorded into the depths of the night in the acoustics of the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral and All Hallow's Church, Gospel Oak, the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge explores five works of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt spanning 20 years: 'Da Pacem, Domine', the mesmerising 'The Woman with the Alabaster Box', his Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis settings, and, joined by the strings of The Dmitri Ensemble, his emotionally-charged 'Stabat Mater'. Conductor Graham Ross sits these compositions alongside two major works by composers that share something of Pärt's unmistakable soundworld: the 2009 Miserere setting by the Scottish composer James MacMillan, and the atmospheric 'Plainscapes' by Pēteris Vasks - inspired by the flatlands of the composer's native Latvia.
